Thousands of fairgoers move through the midway on Oct. 19, 2017. Over 1 million people attended the 2017 NC State Fair held from Oct. 12-22, 2017 with Saturday, Oct. 21 seeing the largest number of attendees at 148,424. The fair offered a plethora of different fried foods to enjoy, games to play and rides to experience, as well as musical performances, agricultural exhibits and livestock shows.

Students crowd Clark Dining Hall on Monday to enjoy popular foods from native cultures in North America as part of Indigenous Peoples' Day.  NC State was the first university in North Carolina to celebrate Indigenous Peoples' Day instead of Columbus Day in an effort to give the native community and culture increased recognition.

In addition to Brooks' miniature paintings, the Caldwell Fellows shack sold plants, second-hand clothing, pressed fern art pieces and baked goods to raise money for Habitat for Humanity.

Sir the Baptist, the stage name of William James Stokes, raps at Red Hat Amphitheater on Saturday, September 9, 2017. The eleven townhomes built as a part of Habitat for Humanity's Build-A-Block project were dedicated on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at the dedication and celebration ceremony held at the Lake Wheeler site. In addition to the five homes already completed, two of the final six homes were fully finished, while construction on the last four will continue into the summer, after which the families can move in.

Jillian Tufo, a sophomore studying business administration, and Jacob Whitaker, a sophomore studying computer science, pet ducks owned by Mary Brown, a freshman studying animal science. The grown and baby ducks, which were two months and two weeks old, respectively, were not part of the official LDOC activities, but students had the chance to pet and interact with them at Wolf Plaza on April 28.

Thomas Imboden, an employee from the catering kitchen located in Talley Student Union, flips burger patties outside of Alexander Hall on April 28, the last day of spring semester classes. The burgers were served in an outdoor buffet on Stafford Commons. In addition to the buffet, students could have picked up a voucher for free food from local food truck businesses or played one of many games located at Wolf Plaza and Stafford Commons.

Eric Butler, an NC State alumnus who studied zoology, teaches a young spectator about the deer skull Butler is holding. Butler now works with Shaw University, which was heavily involved in the Raleigh March of Science, and he voluteered to educate visitors to the community science fair held in Moore Square about a variety of animal life. The science fair was held in conjunction with the Raleigh March for Science on April 22, 2017.

Harris missed the step off of the march and instead jumped into the crowd as it made its way through downtown. This was not her first march, as she previously participated in the Women's March held in January.

The community science fair was part of the first ever Raleigh March for Science held on Earth Day, April 22, 2017.

The table had poster paper with thought-provoking questions, such as "Can scientists rise up against social justice?" and citizens had the opportunity to write down their responses. The science fair was held as part of the first ever held Raleigh March for Science, one of the many science marches that took place across the world on Earth Day.

Many signs, including this one that reads "EPA to lose 56 programs and nearly 4000 jobs," criticized the Trump's administration actions regarding the environment and science, in this case specifically the proposed budget cuts to the Environmental Protection Agency. Thousands of citizens came out to the Raleigh March for Science held on April 22, 2017 in support of science and to protest these federal actions.

A marcher's sign reads "I did not spend 50+ hours a week and thousands on my education to have my government disrespect it," a sentiment echoed by many others that participated in the first ever Raleigh March for Science. The Raleigh march was one of over 500 sister marches that were held across the globe on Earth Day, April 22, 2017 and hundreds of thousands of individuals the world over came out to protest the state of public policy towards science.

A sign reading "when the winds of change blow some people build walls and others build windmills" was one of the many that criticized, either directly or indirectly, the current federal administration and its stance on the environment and science. Thousands of marchers at the Raleigh March for Science expressed their frustrations on April 22, 2017 through chants and these signs.

Holes like this one pop up across the campus due to students taking bricks as keepsakes and the gaps in the walkways can sometimes grow to be rather large.  Stealing a brick, while not an official tradition of the university, is a well-known practice among students.

Seth Champion, a sophomore studying natural resources, fills containers with chocolate Howling Cow ice cream in the Robert H. Feldmeier Dairy Processing Lab in Schaub Hall on April 12. The equipment used to fill canisters not only moves ice cream from the tank where it's stirred; the nozzle is also attached to a hopper used to add such things as chocolate chips or cookie dough pieces.

Large tanks located in the Robert H. Feldmeier Dairy Processing Lab hold ice cream mix to be transitioned to tubs for sale. Milk was pasteurized in additional containers in a different section of the lab and then moved to these tanks in preparation for the final stages of production of Howling Cow Ice Cream, stages that occurred on April 12.

Chocolate ice cream is mixed in a large container early April 12 in the Robert H. Feldmeier Dairy Processing Lab. The lab pasteurized the ice cream mix on Tuesday and allowed the mix to sit for a cure period, a practice that improves the ice cream.  The simple flavors, chocolate and vanilla, are filled first in a day's production, followed by more difficult flavors like mint chocolate chip, Wolftracks, etc.

Crenshaw discussed the history of racial injustice in America and the struggle for equality in access to education, among other issues faced by people of color. She told the story of efforts to provide curriculum at institutions of higher learning that minorities wished to see, saying "[w]hat we could not understand is why people didn't understand that we were doing in these institutions was simply the intellectual equivalent of sitting in at the lunch counter. You sit in at the site of your oppression."

Marc Edwards, professor of civil and environmental engineering at Virginia Tech, speaks at the first Gerald H. Elkan Distinguished Lecture in Science and Society about his journey as an engineer and his involvement in the 2001-2004 D.C. Lead Crisis and 2014-2016 Flint Water Disaster. The lecture was held in the Duke Energy Hall of the James B. Hunt Library on Tuesday evening. During his description of the Environmental Protection Agency's cover-up of the dangerous lead levels in Flint's water supply, Edwards spoke about a graph the agency used to try and convince locals the water was safe. Part of the trend line was drawn using the Microsoft Word free draw tool, and was just one of the ways the EPA avoided taking action to help the Flint community.

Lauren Schnabel stands with Charlie, one of her thoroughbred horses that lives on the NC State Veterinary School Campus. Schnabel is an assistant professor of equine orthopedic surgery who also conducts research in regenerative medicine, focusing on immunologic properties of stem cells, including both mesenchymal and induced pluripotent stem cells. Mesenchymal cells can become bone, cartilage, muscle and fat cells and induced pluripotent stem cells can become any body cell. The goal of Schnabel's work is to develop therapies that would allow veterinarians to treat patients with stem cells directly following diagnosis and her research has been published in multiple scientific journals.

The event provided undergraduates the opportunity to connect with faculty members and learn about research occurring across campus in a conversational setting.

During the question and answer session following his talk on material self-assembly, repair and replication, Skylar Tibbits answers a question about what implications his lab's work could have on third-world nations. Tibbits, who has an undergraduate degree in architecture and a graduate degree in computer science and design computation, spoke in Stewart Theatre on Jan. 30 as part of the Goodnight Scholars Program in front of a sizable crowd on the work of the MIT Self-Assembly Lab.

A winter snowstorm hit campus late Friday night and students took advantage of the snow and ice to sled, many coming to the hills in the Court of North Carolina. Some students, including Blackmon, had store-bought sleds, while others used cardboard boxes, plastic bins and laundry baskets to slide down the slopes.

Asa Rogerson, a freshman studying engineering, tells Lori Sneed, whose son is also a first-year engineering student, about the use of a cheese grater in his group's concrete canoe design project. Rogerson explained that many of the materials his group used to make the canoes were household kitchen items, and the canoes performed successfully at Freshman Engineering Design Day in the McKimmon Center on Nov. 22.
