Katie Lokey, a junior studying environmental technology and management, Lauren Vess, a senior studying environmental technology, and Matt Moore, a senior studying natural resources management, spray a watershed model during the annual NC State Earth Fair at the Brickyard Wednesday. The demonstration, hosted by representatives from the NC State Environmental Health and Safety Center, showed how most storm water flows to the creek rather than to the wastewater treatment plant. "It's been really great seeing all the groups out here," Moore said. The Earth Fair offered students and the public the opportunity to learn about sustainable options and making the world a better place.

Molasses, a Holstein cow, chews her cud in the Brickyard Wednesday. Molasses was one of two cows brought in the Brickyard for a milking contest that took place between two NC State police officers. The milking contest was just one event of several taking place during Agricultural Awareness Week in the Brickyard.

Hurricane Matthew caused extensive damage to the SOUL (Students for Organic United Living) Garden located by Lake Raleigh on Centennial Campus. Members of several student groups including the Nutrition Cub, the American Marketing Association and the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws helped clean up the damage Sunday, Oct. 30. Catie McEntee, a graduate student studying electrical engineering and co-manager of the garden, said of the damage, "It's sad but we're excited to rebuild the SOUL Garden."

Kyra Levau, a sophomore studying environmental science, explains to Jeffrey Friedler, a senior studying business administration, about how to properly dispose of clamshells in the lobby of Talley Student Union Wednesday. Levau and other representatives of the Office of Waste Reduction & Recycling offered students the opportunity to play a game of determining whether certain objects were to be thrown away or recycled in order to earn prizes. "It was very informative" Friedler said. "For example, I learned that plastic clamshells have their own recycling bin on campus!" According to Levau, the purpose of the game was to promote Recycle Mania, a tournament in which schools across the nation compete to see who can recycle the most as well as to make people aware of what they can and cannot recycle on campus.

Jeremy Fulkerson, a State Farm Agent from Charlotte, talks about topics to discuss in the sales and marketing discovery process during a workshop of the State Farm Sales and Marketing Academy in room 3221 in Talley Student Union Friday. According to Fulkerson, the purpose of the Academy is for State Farm and NC State to partner and provide students sales and marketing and entrepreneurship skills they can use not only as a student but also for building career skills. "I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and the great connections that I gained" said Brendan Gallagher, a sophomore studying business administration, when asked about his experience with the workshop. According to Kara Powell, Employees Relations Assistant with the Career Development Center, this is the second year the academy has taken place at NC State. Other workshops will be held March 17 and March 31 from 12:30-2:30 p.m. State Farm Agents from across the state will act as mentors for the students and will assist them throughout the semester for a sales and marketing competition. The final competition will take place on April 21 and the winner will win a MacBook computer and private dinner with State Farm agents and sales leaders and may qualify for a national sales competition with State Farm Insurance.

Samantha Gasson, owner of Bull City Farm, Crissty Scott and Denise Hudson stuff sausages to make a jalapeno-cheddar smoked beef sausage during a Charcuterie School workshop in the Processed Meat Laboratory in Schaub Hall Monday. Dana J Hanson, associate professor of food science, taught a month-long series of weekly workshops designed for professional chefs or anyone in the food industry who wants to learn the art and science of making high quality cured meats. This was the last workshop in the first series of workshops, which started in January, and the next series will start Feb. 27. Gasson said she had a "wonderful experience" with the workshop and Hanson described it as "where art and science come together."

The survey was the largest survey of transgender adults ever conducted and asked them questions related to various aspects of their life such as health and level of outness.

Jackie Blake, a senior studying animal science, Ruth Stalvey, a resident of Raleigh, Kristen Grimshaw, an intern with the Pamlico Albemarle Wildlife Conservationists Chapter of the North Carolina Wildlife Federation, and Steve Buczynski, a resident of Durham, hold signs of protest while marching around campus Wednesday. A group of protesters came out to Pullen Park to support the Red Wolf Recovery and also marched around campus to promote their cause. According to Ron Sutherland, a conservation scientist with the Wildlands Network, the purpose of the rally was to demonstrate that the public of North Carolina support the endangered red wolf's presence in the state. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service is considering ending the Wildlife Recovery Program and will be making a decision next month about the fate of the red wolf. Also according to Sutherland, there are only 40 red wolves left in the wild.

Yadavalli is president of the NC State student chapter of the Association for Women in Mathematics, which hosts a series of Weekly Brown Bag Lunches every Wednesday at noon. The organization has had weekly lunches since 2013 and according to vice president and fellow mathematics graduate student Suzanne Crifo, the lunches provide a "great time to take a break" and interact with faculty in a more casual manner.  Everyone is welcome to attend the lunches. The Association for Women in Mathematics' purpose is to encourage women and girls to study and pursue careers in the mathematical sciences and promote equal opportunity and treatment of women in mathematics.

  Beliz Ilica, a freshman majoring in design studies from Turkey, Aditya Shirode, a graduate student studying computer science from India, Amr Helal, a fourth-year Ph.D. candidate studying civil engineering from Egypt, and Kalpit Mehta and Shashank Mathur, second-year graduate students studying electrical engineering from India, work together as a team. They put together the letters for the Russian word for university as part of the final challenge in the fifth annual Pangea Race, on the third floor of Witherspoon Student Center Friday. The team, which called themselves the "Global Pack" finished first place in the race for their course. There were eight challenges each team had to complete in order to receive clues for the next location on the course. Challenges included identifying international flags, playing a game of cricket and spray painting flags on the Free Expression Tunnel. The six teams consisted of mostly international students along with some American students. This was Helal's third Pangea race and the second one in which he was on the winning team. "I think it's a very good experience working as a team with different cultures and different personalities," Helal said. The Office of International Services sponsored the event.

Jay Shively, dean for admissions and financial aid at Wake Forest University School of Law, gives tips on writing personal statements for law school applications in Talley Student Union on Tuesday. Shively and Darren Kettles, director of admissions at Stetson University School of Law, gave a presentation on personal statements as part of one of three workshops offered prior to the Law School Fair. The two other workshops offered included one on how law schools evaluate applications and another on financing your legal education. The fair was open to all college students, alumni or anyone attending law school. "The workshops were very insightful as they allowed students to have direct interaction with actual law schools" said Ashle Page, a senior studying polymer and color chemistry.

Seth Harper, a freshman studying engineering, reads his fortune from Kayla Phillips, a senior studying parks, recreation and tourism management, while she looks on at the Brickyard Wednesday. Harper's fortune was, "Life will sometimes suck, but you can get through it." Phillips is the president of the NC State chapter of the Clown Nose Club. The club originally started originally at Penn State in 2010 and the NC State chapter was established in 2011. Phillips described the club's mission as bringing joy to campus and bringing a smile to people's faces as they're walking to class. "We have a lot of fun, and we would love for people to join us," Phillips said. The club has events including High Five Giveaways and is planning on having an origami making session in Talley Student Union in November.

As part of Fire Prevention Week, the fire marshals on campus talked about and gave out materials on fire safety and also gave out free fireman's hats. "I think it's good that they're out here and educating people" said Lukas Morris, a freshman studying life science who came out to the event. Boggs said that educating the public is one of the NC State Fire Department's favorite things to do. 

Omar Halawani, a senior studying biology, collects ants from a tree using an aspirator near the Court of North Carolina Wednesday. Halawani was collecting ants to use them for testing antimicrobial compounds on their bodies and trying to see which species can defend themselves against bacteria. Halawani has been collecting ants around Raleigh, particularly for the Natural Research Center at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. "Hands-on experience in research has been the most rewarding opportunity at NC State and really helped me choose the field I want to follow," Halawani said.

"Volunteering abroad changed my life for the better"  Johnson said about his experience with the program.  "I've changed my worldview and I have so many friends around the world." Programs are offered in countries ranging from Peru to Cambodia to South Africa.  "Volunteering completely changed the path I've taken in life since I've started.  I've loved every minute of it" Walker said when asked about his volunteer experience.  "Reach Out Volunteer Program looks like a life changing opportunity.  It would be a blessing to be able to travel to a different country to help children take care of elephants" DeBrew said when asked what she thought after the information session.
