"My favorite thing about teaching the aquatic classes is seeing the personal growth that every student experiences. There are significant challenges, but they apply the principles of the class and overcome their obstacles," Rever said. This semester, Rever teaches skin and scuba diving, but also teaches swimming, lifeguard training, indoor group cycling and target archery. He also serves on the Faculty Senate.

Kobi Felton, a fourth-year studying chemical engineering, will be traveling to the U.K. next semester to study at the University of Cambridge on the Marshall Scholarship. The scholarship will provide Felton with all expenses needed to study in the U.K. for two years. Felton is the third student from NC State to receive this scholarship, with the last NC State recipient being in 2008.

Andy DeRoin, program coordinator of the GLBT Center is conducting research on transgender and gender non-conforming students in University Housing. DeRoin said, “This study is two-fold: to gain a benchmark understanding the gender inclusive housing practices (or lack thereof) of other institutions and to gain deeper awareness of the ways in which transgender students are impacted by the current gendered housing policies here at NC State.”

Claudia Alberico, a graduate teacher and research assistant in the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism, Aaron Hipp, associate professor of community health and sustainability in the College of Natural Resources, and Oriol Marquet, researcher in parks and management, recently shared their research on video games that incorporate physical activity, including Pokemon Go. The researchers focused on changes in activity levels following the release of the popular app: Pokemon Go, which encourages users to find virtual "Pokemon" in their area. The NC State alumni are optimistic about virtual reality games improving health of students on college campuses, and elsewhere.

NC State's first 9/11 Memorial Ceremony and Run is held on Stafford Commons to honor those who lost their lives due to the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. American flags formed a pentagon which surrounded the two towers and the numbers nine and three, which commemorated all of those on United Airlines Flight 93 who died in the attacks. Christopher Caporali, a senior studying meteorology, hoped this event would "inspire change in how we respond to acts of terrorism as a Pack, as a Raleigh community and as a country." Caporali, several on-campus organizations and local Raleigh fire and police departments gathered Saturday morning to celebrate the resilience of the American people 15 years later.
