Professor Frances Ligler, Lampe Distinguished Professor in the joint NC State and UNC-Chapel Hill Department of Biomedical Engineering, performs research in the field of biosensors, biomaterials and microfluidics. Ligler said her "work with biosensors and biomaterials is very interdisciplinary." Ligler was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame for her work on optical biosensors.

Dylan Reinhardt, a graduate student senator studying biological and agricultural engineering, speaks about Resolution 89, the University Housing Marijuana Thank You Act, at the Student Senate meeting on Wednesday in the Senate Chamber located in Talley Student Union. Reinhardt described a student's experience when caught with marijuana in his dorm to gain support for passage of the bill, which thanked the university for "reducing the impact of low-level marijuana offenses on NC State students."

Hurricane Matthew caused extensive damage to the SOUL (Students for Organic United Living) garden located by Lake Raleigh on Centennial Campus. Members of several student groups helped clean up the damage Sunday, Oct. 30. Catie McEntee, a graduate student studying electrical engineering and co-manager of the garden, said of the damage, "It's sad but we're excited to rebuild the SOUL garden."

The Goodnight Scholars distinguished speaker Fredi Lajvardi speaks in Talley Student Center about his past high school students, who, despite being undocumented immigrants, were able to build a robot which beat that of MIT. Lajvardi stated that "though those four boys [his students] struggled and only one got the American dream, they opened the doors for so many more." He continued to advocate for STEM and for diversity within STEM. When speaking to the future teachers in the audience he commented that the biggest thing missing was the ability to inspire and motivate the students and, of himself, thought "instead of a teacher, I became an obstacle remover. I prefer the term facilitate."

A colorful plate of barbeque pulled pork, roasted root vegetables, local corn on the cob and a fried cornbread sandwich represent just a few of the options offered at Clark Dining Hall on Monday.  Clark Dining Hall hosted the Indigenous North America Dinner, which was part of the second annual Indigenous Peoples' Day.  Indigenous Peoples' Day was started by NC State's Native American students in 2015 to recognize the history, culture and traditions of Native Americans.

NC State's first 9/11 Memorial Ceremony and Run is held on Stafford Commons to honor those who lost their lives due to the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. American flags formed a pentagon which surrounded the two towers and the numbers nine and three, which commemorated all of those on United Airlines Flight 93 who died in the attacks. Christopher Caporali, a senior studying meteorology, hoped this event would "inspire change in how we respond to acts of terrorism as a Pack, as a Raleigh community and as a country." Caporali, several on-campus organizations and local Raleigh fire and police departments gathered Saturday morning to celebrate the resilience of the American people 15 years later.
